What does that accomplish?  If I cound understand that, perhaps there's
another way to address your concern.  For example, does installing some
version of the GCC patch for showing MPFR version in "gcc -v" output
address your needs?

Also, would you still want to upgrade the minimum MPFR required by GCC to
version 2.3.0, or just waiting until the MPFR release would be enough?

This option appeals to me the least.  There's resistance to this among the
GCC community.  IMHO installing some version of the "gcc -v" patch would
better address your concern about user bug reports and developers
reproducing their errors.

I'll try and see when mpfr-2.3.0 will be released.  Maybe that will put
some of this in context.
