Is the problem a regression on the 4.1 branch too? If not, please refrain from touching reload at this point.

4.1 has Vlad's accurate liveness code, and the two other bug fixes I mentioned, so there's no reason to believe the problem does not affect the branch. The patch is conservative, and not intrusive. I've bootstrapped and regression tested it on i686-linux. Ok to commit?
