Actually I've looked at tramp3d...
In tramp3d centering_table_m is a global 3 dimensional 
matrix, allocated this way:
 
 centering_table_m = new Centering<Dim>**[CellType+1];
    for (int i = 0; i <= CellType; ++i) {
      centering_table_m[i] = new Centering<Dim>*[2];
      for (int j = 0; j < 2; ++j)
        centering_table_m[i][j] = new Centering<Dim>[1<<Dim];

So I guess this could also be a candidate for matrix 
optimizations.
