This is pretty interesting, as some decisions were made 10 years ago to
support this situation but have been untested until now. So, I take it
that stringstreams work?

Interesting: if you can, I'd like to see testresults for this target
posted on gcc-testresults.
as it happens, the target that needed this (coldfire) now does have fileio (via
gdb). However, we're bringing up another target (bare metal powerpc) that
doesn't have fileio. I'll post the results of that when we've got them into shape.
