I'd prefer to operate by consensus and I don't think we've achieved that
for requiring a hard upgrade to 2.2.1.  I think Paolo's instinct to avoid
that responsibility was the right one, not IMHO because he's a new
configury maintainer, but because it would go against just about everybody
else who has voiced an opinion.

Therefore I request that my original patch in this thread be reconsidered
for mainline (and only for mainline as it is not necessary on 4.2.)

We can revisit this decision obviously any time between now and the 4.3
release, which is a long way off.  So there's no reason IMHO to push the
hard error right now.
