In general, it is fine to backport patches from mainline to the branch
to fix regressions. I don't need to sign off on that; if it's already
in mainline, and it fixes the PR, and you're confident in the backport
it's OK. Please do take care, though; if you feel a backport might be
risky, please ask for a review (from me, or any other qualified reviewer).
I don't think I'm the best person to review this particular code. If
you feel confident, check it in. Otherwise, please ask explicitly for a
review.
