Well, at this point, I would consider implementing the script in m4sh
completely.

Since these old systems without dirname(1) most likely will have other
GNU utilities installed and not only GNU make which is necessary for GCC
compilation, and since most of them will be too slow to bootstrap GCC
and to compile libjava, what about committing the patch as is and
working incrementally?
