If we hit an "Unexpected end of file", we can use fatal_error to immediately abort. At least to me, it seems rather dumb to try to free memory and recover after that error. Just punt to the OS and let it clean up.
Or just use the normal freeing scheme, but with a flag that says "don't panick if something seems wrong, we're in error recovery mode".
