The front-end patch was approved 'in principle' a long time ago, but
with the caveat that it should not be checked in until it caused no
regressions.  This patch fixes the last of the regressions.  I was going
to try and get this patch approved and checked in first, then submit the
compiler patch so that I can say that the compiler patch causes no
regressions and doesn't depend on any non-checked-in changes, but I 
can submit the compiler change and specify that it is dependent on this
change to fix the regressions that it causes.
