Oh, I forgot to mention that. That change does require GNU make, but only when --enable-maintainer-mode is in effect. Without that change, --enable-maintainer-mode fails, complaining that make can't build "alloca.c" (which it can't, it needs to be $(srcdir)/ alloca.c). I forgot to put a ChangeLog line for that, too, it will be:


(stamp-functions): Add $(srcdir) to files in source directory.

If you can think of a way to do this without requiring GNU make, I'd be happy to implement that too, but I didn't think we cared about using --enable-maintainer-mode when you don't have GNU tools installed.
