I'm going to try not to get into an argument about this (some of the
changes I do consider pretty dubious) but...

... the reason they want this one, as I understand it, is that GCC is
going to be usable as the system compiler on Solaris 10 - not just for
Sun, but for anyone developing Solaris kernel modules, too.  So this
seems like a feature that would be useful to GCC's users on this
platform.
