There are still a couple of other steps on the checklist that need to be taken
care of as well. I may not get to them until Sunday, but they are not

I can deal with .pot regeneration and submission (having in practice been doing most of the i18n maintenance instead of the i18n maintainer for some time).

Thank you.

The most nearly critical matter would be avoiding the next snapshot from mainline being generated and announced as a 4.0 snapshot.

I've updated the crontab (both in maintainer_scripts and on gcc.gnu.org). I don't understand the instructions about building the next snapshot manually and adjusting references that appear. (Whatever this task is, it seems like the kind of thing that we ought to be able to automate better.)

I'm going to try to tidy some of this stuff up a bit. It's better than it
was, but there are still more places to update than should really be
necessary.

I suspect a branching script would help. If the number of locations of the version number are to be reduced further, either the unique location should be gcc-common.texi or update_web_docs needs to be updated to generate whatever generated .texi file gets the version number when building online docs.

Thanks for pointing out this dependency.
