I have nothing against Dan's patch, but you can't expect the compiler to magically stabilize if brand new code keeps being added regularly.

May I remind you that we're not only supposed to be in stage 3, but in strict regression fixing mode for some time?

Yes, that's precisely why I'm asking. I've been asked by some people to consider this patch, and I'm trying to figure out what to do about it. My inclination is to reject the patch, for exactly the reasons you state, but I'm trying to guage the overall sentiment of other people.
