with a check to make sure the variable was marked as hidden.

If you do dj-option compile as I recall, it will work and actually test this. Please be sure that the testcase you check in fails without your patch.

No "dg-do compile" does not work, it is "dg-do assemble" which assembles the code.

I committed the following patch to make sue that it worked.
