I think all the online stuff for v3 is generated off the trunk.  The docs
subdirectory is useful for people viewing things locally, and I know at
least one Linux vendor who pulls their *doc packages from the source dirs.

What I had been doing was to only update the trunk, and then just before
a release, copy over the docs dir en masse.  Differences between versions
are reflected in the text, rather in the file revision, so it should always
be safe.  (I haven't kept up with this.)
