Does that mean the conversion of boehm-gc to automake 1.8.5 will be easy
(given that it already uses autoconf 2.59), leaving just libjava and
toplevel using old versions?

I'd be glad to see the various 1.7.x/1.8.x directories all updated to use
autoconf 2.59 / automake 1.8.5 to get the required versions down to two
(or indeed any updates to 1.8.5 of directories using older versions), if
you wish to do this.
