At this point, we've lost the opportunity to experiment with new ideas. The time for that was months ago. The V3 issues have been the major blocker on the release for nearly two weeks; we need to wrap it up and get this release out the door.

I can't tell whether you're recommending the patch you posted at 10:12 AM, or the follow patch posted slightly later as the "simplified patch". I'm not personally familiar enough with the issues to make a sensible decision; I trust you do that. Please pick the version you think will be most reliable and check it in. Please prioritize safety over features. Please let me know when you have checked in the patch so that I can spin a second release candidate.
