Counter question: Why is this an issue now?
What essentially happens wrt. to the "version" when converting a
configure script from autoconf-2.13/automake-1.4 style
to autoconf-2.5x/automake-1.8 style
is moving the "version" from AM_INIT_AUTOMAKE to AC_INIT.
There are some internal side effects (e.g. AC_DEF'ing PACKAGE_XXXX) but
otherwise it doesn't actually change much.
