I think the fix to 3.4 that fixed the alignment problem in PR 12761
was before Eric's fix, but I'm not completely certain when I discovered
that bootstrapping with -O1 in stage1 would work. I reported that 3.4
seemed ok on 2003-11-01 21:22.
