Err, I would keep backends.html as is.  If you really want to use
HTML, you could probably convert the first table in HTML, but not the
second one.  If you really really want to use HTML, you could have the
page automatically generated from a text file, preserving the raw text
table elsewhere, but that adds an extra indirection, and I don't think
potential improvement in appearance is worth the maintenance effort.
