I do not have a thread, but I am certain that we consciously rejected the use of the parenthesized form in favor of the C99-style brace form.

It looks like no patch was ever submitted, at least partly because of
copyright issues. However, reading the thread certainly gives the impression
that a patch following Motorola syntax would be rejected.
