My figuring was that if it did nothing before, then there's no reason
to do stuff now.

Please, do. The sooner we're done with those weirdo scripts the better.
BTW, I'm sorry about my return address. My local machine name is not
resolvable and I wind up with a choice between sending email with a
bogus Sender: header (which bounces from the gnu.org domain) or sending
with my local machine (which adds the "ellen." to the domain). Since
I'm not on a Windows machine, our IS staff won't help me, either. Sorry.
I'm not a mail configury person.
