There's no other explanation, I've gone completely insane and lost
all grip on reality. My apologies to everyone, please ignore me for
a while.
I think I must have picked up the usage of --disable-pch from this

You'll be pleased to hear I've been using it without problems on
cygwin for weeks :>
Well at least you're not the one who was crazy, I was.
I thought there was an "--{en,dis}able-pch" in gcc. Like you, I've
been using it for a while after I had some build failures due to PCH under
cygwin. Strangely, I could have sworn that it worked around the problem.
