Richard, thanks for working on this.

I'd just like to raise a silly question.  Should we be catering to
stray platforms who use a libc function in crt*.o?  I mean, is this
common?  Is it valid to do so?  (I.e. what happens when -fno-hosted is
used?  Does that imply no startup files are linked in?)

If so, then by all means let's add this layer of complexity.  But if
not...
