Andrew has just run into the same problem. It comes from
aclocal.m4 trying to call automake with the version number as a
suffix. This seems to fix the problem:

	* aclocal.m4: Don't call aclocal and automake with a
	version number suffix.
	* Makefile.in, config.h.in, configure,
	engine/Makefile.in, libcompat/Makefile.in,
	points-to/Makefile.in: Regenerate.
