Yes but that would require a change from the user point of view to sync the names of the static and dynamic libraries.
ah, yes, part of the shared lib is what exisiting names are *not* there.

Why not create immediately libgcov.{so.a} (or any other convenient name) and put the runtime functions in those ?
I'm leaning towards that solution, but as a separate patch.
