Yes, you're right.  I hesitated because strictly speaking, it's no
regression (it probably never worked).

However, I forgot to include in my considerations that 3.2 will be a
system compiler for quite a few distributions, even long after x86-64
systems hit the market.

So, given that the patch is not very intrusive, it's OK with me for the
3.2 branch, too.
