I am not advocating the specific extension proposed by the original
poster, but I think that telling people to go bug the standards
committees is not constructive advice.  The C committee is guaranteed
to reject a request for a new feature that has not yet been
implemented in any widely used compiler.  Thus, if we say we won't
implement extensions until they are added to Standard C, we're saying
we will never again add extensions to C -- which I do not think is a
good idea in general.

I don't know the dynamic of the C++ committee but I would be surprised
if it did not take the same attitude to new features.
