I have verified that the patch at
<URL:http://gcc.gnu.org/ml/gcc-patches/2001-07/msg01998.html> is
an alternative. Reviewer, please consider reviewing it. It
plus Honza's later merge_assigned_reloads patch lets an sh-elf
chain build using the simtest-howto instructions. A "make
check-gcc RUNTESTFLAGS=--target_board=sh-hms-sim" is in
progress.
