That's OK.

Most of the time real efficiency wins come from algorithmic
improvements (like the fact that you are aggregating this data and
avoiding as much memory allocation), rather than from
micro-optimizations (saving a few bytes).  

That's not to say we shouldn't look for ways to do the little things,
too -- but your new patch will get good bang for small buck, and still
preserve the cleanly interface.
