The point is that if I am ever to have any hope of actually finishing
this release, the standards must be lower than we might hope ideally.

The key criteria is that GCC 3.0 be better than GCC 2.95 -- not that
it fix all problems, even relatively serious ones.  For G++ in
particular, we want to build a stable base (the new ABI) for future
progress.
