I thought about that, of course.  But, it seemed conceivable that this
information might be useful in other places as well and there are, for
now at least, plenty of bits.  Your suggestion would entail passing
the variable around a bit: we'd actually create the variable in
finish_struct and then pass it into finish_struct_methods and
finish_struct_1. 

If you object strongly, it's easy to change it as you suggest, of
course.
