PATCH to fix java build problem

The java front end needs to be compiled with gcc. However, some files
were erroneously built before `stage1' (or is the terminology "in
stage1"? Whatever).
I'm checking in the appended patch to fix this.
Is there a document I can read that describes the rationale for this
mailing list?
