David, thank you. I do use GNU tar habitually because I sometimes get
checksum errors when I run Solaris 8's tar.

Here are the error messages I get when I try to build gcc-4.2.0. I don't know whether they're about Java, because I can't find the documents on the www that told me they were about it.

error:Looks like you were not using GNU tar to unpack the sources.
ext/pb_ds/detail/bin_search_tree_/constructors_destructor_fn_imps.hpp:
No such file or directory
That should be a documented requirement.
