32 bit Global Offset Table on MIPS: howto?

- Subject: 32 bit Global Offset Table on MIPS: howto?
I tried using the -xgot assembler option (-Wa,-xgot), and it makes no
difference whatsoever. The .o file remains identical. Same 16 bit
relocations for the GOT offsets, same instructions.
What's the trick?
