gcc help with java error

Subject: gcc help with java error

Linux novice.
Trying to load gcc-3.4.1 on i686 Pentium II.
Now have gcc-3.2.2-5.
bootstrap-lean
but make gives java/jcf-io.o Error 1
Where do I go or what do I do now?
