the old delay function

Subject: the old delay function

Hi everybody

I started to programing on my Debian  with a acquire card made by
myself, but I couldn't find an instruction to "wait on line" just
nanoseconds like the old "delay(nanoseconds)" Did u rememember it? that
was used in Dos-tc programing. 
Could u recomend book for "hardware programing for aqcuire data"?
