gcc-3.1.1: make bootstrap fails on Darwin/Altivec

Dear everybody,
I'm trying to build gcc-3.1.1 on MacOS 10.1.5 (PowerBook G4). I am not an expert, so please excuse me if I am doing something silly.

I started with

../gcc-3.1.1/configure --prefix=/usr/local/gcc-3.1.1 --enable-altivec --enable-languages=c,c++

followed by 'make bootstrap'. The latter failed as follows:

...
./xgcc -B./ -B/usr/local/gcc-3.1.1/powerpc-apple-darwin5.5/bin/ -isystem /usr/local/gcc-3.1.1/powerpc-apple-darwin5.5/include -isystem /usr/local/gcc-3.1.1/powerpc-apple-darwin5.5/sys-include -O2 -DIN_GCC -W -Wall -Wwrite-strings -Wstrict-prototypes -Wmissing-prototypes -isystem ./include -g -DIN_LIBGCC2 -D__GCC_FLOAT_NOT_NEEDED -I. -I. -I../../gcc-3.1.1/gcc -I../../gcc-3.1.1/gcc/. -I../../gcc-3.1.1/gcc/config -I../../gcc-3.1.1/gcc/../include -fexceptions -c ../../gcc-3.1.1/gcc/unwind-dw2.c -o libgcc/./unwind-dw2.o

make[2]: *** [stmp-multilib] Error 2
make[1]: *** [stage1_build] Error 2
make: *** [bootstrap] Error 2

I guess there is something wrong with the assembler because the problem arises in a .s-file. Can somebody help me?

Thanks a lot,
Kaspar
