FWIW - My problem manifests itself as this in my
/root/download/gcc-3.1/i686-pc-linux-gnu/libiberty/config.log (check
end for actual error message - the configure script complains that my
new gcc doesn't work):

This file contains any messages produced by compilers while
running configure, to aid debugging if configure makes a mistake.
