I expected that this would fail at the beginning or work
successfully. My expectations were not met. I got a little further and
then it failed. So, while I include what happened below, my question
is now, what do you mean by newer version. Do I need to install a
newer version than I have, but not necessarily the current version, of
GCC. Or am I waiting for a newer version than the one I downloaded and
tried to install. Or is there a way to give the configure script
enough information to indentify the machine and support it.
The GCC distribution's configure visits configure in
various sub directories and configures programs. When I specified
nothing the config.guess program came up with the
"macppc-unknown-netbsd1.5" which was instantly unuseable.
When I tried
./configure powerpc-apple-netbsdelf1.5
( I also tried ./configure powerpc-apple-netbsd1.5 with the same result)
It would procede through
Configuring libiberty...
Configuring texinfo...
and get to
Configuring gcc...
where it would die after successfully running most of the compiler tests
checking whether strsignal must be declared... no
checking whether putc_unlocked must be declared... no
checking whether fputs_unlocked must be declared... yes
checking whether strstr must be declared... no
checking whether getrlimit must be declared... no
checking whether setrlimit must be declared... no
checking for sys_siglist declaration in signal.h or unistd.h... yes
checking if mkdir takes one argument... no
Configuration powerpc-apple-netbsdelf1.5 not supported
Configure in /home/josh/gcc-2.95/gcc failed, exiting.
bash-2.05$
After that I just cd'ed into the /home/josh/gcc-2.95/gcc directory and
tried to run confiugre from there with the same result. I just wanted
to make sure the the host type was being passed.
