ARM9 support??

I was wondering if anyone could verify the ARM9 compiler support for GCC. I
looked at the docs and it appears to be there but I have heard reports that
it does not pipeline instructions correctly for the ARM9. Can anyone verify
this support? We are about to start a project with this processor and do not
want to pay the prices for the toolchain from ARC if we do not have to.
