gcc Compile error

Subject: gcc Compile error

When I attempt to cross compile - see below:

gcc -m68020 -o test test.c

I get an error:

 Invalid option `68020

I must be making a simple mistake.  
I am using gcc 2.7 on a HP-UX system.
Thanks in advance for any help.
