I fully agree. ENCODE/DECODE have standard conforming equivalents and are not
difficult to replace by the latter.
I'll go a step further by replacing the last sentence in the g77 notes by:
"ENCODE and DECODE will not be supported by future version of gfortran."
to close the matter.
