arm-elf-gcc 4.0.3: ICE when compiling crtstuff.c

Compiling crtstuff.c with arm-elf-gcc 4.0.3 for -mthumb -fPIC
-msingle-pic-base fails. I had no trouble compiling GCC 4.1.1.
