We just ran into this trying to link a .a compiled with gcc-3.4.x
against an app using gcc-4.0.1. Unfortunately, the .a is from a third
party, so we can't share it or even look at the source ourselves.
Here are a couple other posts which mention a similar bug.
One of them almost has a simple test case.
