I *was* able to compile gtk+-2.6.3 with gcc 3.4.4-20050225:
tom@linux:~$ gcc -v
Reading specs from /usr/lib/gcc/i686-pc-linux-gnu/3.4.4/specs
Configured with: ../configure --prefix=/usr --enable-languages=c,c++ --enable-shared
Thread model: posix
gcc version 3.4.4 20050225 (prerelease)
