Following test case shows that 'volatile' is not needed to prevent removal of an 'asm'.
% cat t.c
int main()
{
asm ("nop");
}
% mygccm5o -S -O4 t.c
% cat t.s
.text
.align 2
.globl _main
_main:
nop
blr
.subsections_via_symbols
