the bootstrap was attempted like:

mkdir /tmp/gcc
mkdir testbuild
cd testbuild/
../gcc-3.5-20040725/configure --prefix=/tmp/gcc
make bootstrap STAGE1_CFLAGS="-no-cpp-precomp -Wa,-force_cpusubtype_ALL 
-g"

I don't know if the cause for this is the same like that for PR 16649, 
reporting it just in case.
