ARGH. What do I have today? Correction again:
The remark WAS for the as output (.o) file, cc1
produces the .s file of course.

So, sorry - but I meant the final linker (collect2)
to be the problem case :/. But still, it works fine
for me with both mainline (and -gstabs) as well as
2.95.3.

~>gcc-2.95.3 -gstabs troep.c
~>objdump -G a.out | egrep '(n_value|troep\.c)'
Symnum n_type n_othr n_desc n_value  n_strx String
0      SO     0      0      080483d0 1      troep.c

~>echo "main() {}" > troep.c
~>gcc-cvs-3.4 -gstabs troep.c
~>objdump -G a.out | egrep '(n_value|troep\.c)'
Symnum n_type n_othr n_desc n_value  n_strx String
0      SO     0      0      08048314 1      troep.c
