I can confirm this on the mainline (20030731).
you have to put X.java and Y.java into a subdirectory called p and then compile X.java:
gcj -v p/X.java
It new ICEs only with checking turned on also.
otherwise I get :
./p/X.java:6: confused by earlier errors, bailing out
